Breakers sign Norwegian striker
The Boston Breakers have signed Norwegian forward Emilie Haavi, the team announced Monday.
Haavi, 24, from Baerum, Norway, played for Lillestrøm SK Kvinner (LSK Kvinner) in Norway’s Toppserien. In four seasons with LSK, Haavi scored 49 goals in 82 games, helping the club win the Toppserien and Norwegian Cup in 2014 and 2015.
“I'm really looking forward to becoming a member of the Breakers family and wearing that blue jersey,” Haavi said in a release. “To play in the NWSL has always been a dream of mine. I can't wait to get the season started.”
Haavi played for Røa (2009-2012), winning a Toppserien championship and Norwegian Cup for the Western Norway based club. Haavi scored 39 goals in 51 games with Røa.
“Emilie is a player that I have been watching for the past few years,” Breakers coach Matt Beard said. “She is an exciting, pacey winger who will be a great addition to the team. She has been a key part of LSK and her national team, playing in the Champions League and major tournaments.”
Haavi represented Norway at the 2011 and 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cups, scoring the game-winner against Equatorial Guinea in the group stage in 2011 and playing all three group stage matches in 2015. Haavi made her Norway debut against Canada in 2010 and has scored 15 goals in 59 games.
