Breakers lose former USWNT defender Whitney Engen

Former U.S. Women’s National Team defender Whitney Engen will not return to the Boston Breakers this season, the team announced Wednesday.

Engen, 29, played 14 games, totaling a goal and an assist, for the Breakers last season. Engen also played 23 games for the Western New York Flash and Houston Dash in her NWSL career. Engen earned 40 caps and was part of the U.S. team that won the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Canada.

“It’s a shame to lose a player of Whitney's caliber, but we respect how she feels and wish her all luck in the world for her next venture,” Breakers coach Matt Beard said.
