Mutiny names coaching staff
SPRINGFIELD, Ma. -- Joe Abele will return for his second season as coach of the New England Mutiny, the team announced Friday.
The Munity, who will meet the New York Magic in their United Women’s Soccer season-opener at East Longmeadow High School at 7 p.m. Saturday, May 14.
"Joe did a tremendous job with the squad last season," New England Mutiny owner Joe Ferrara, Jr. said. "With his return along with our core group of players coming back, I feel that consistency and familiarity with the system will take us to greater heights this year in United Women's Soccer."
"This is going to be an exciting year for us," said Abele, who led New England to the Power 5 Division title last year with a 8-2 record. "We have a great core of veterans, an outstanding group of new players and amazing chemistry. We are looking forward to the challenges of the new league and what it has to offer."
Abele, a Mutiny assistant during the 2006-07 season, returned to the team as goalkeeper coach in 2014. Abele, who will be assisted by goalkeeper coach Rebecca Lewis, has been a coach for West Hartford Premiere/FSAFC UNITED since 2007 and West Hartford Boys Travel coach since 2008. Abele holds a NSCAA National Goalkeeping Diploma as well as a USSF coaching license.
Lewis is an Ithaca College graduate and played in the NCAA Division 3 Tournament each year she played for the Bombers, including a Final Four appearance. Lewis played her fifth year at Central Connecticut State University, winning the Northeast Conference championship and qualifying for the NCAA Tournament, her fifth appearance. Lewis won a gold medal in the 2015 European Maccabi Games for the U.S., allowing no goals.
