SECOND-HALF STRUGGLE
UMass men shut out by Syracuse


SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- The UMass menís team started strong, but struggled in the second half of a 3-0 loss to No. 6 Syracuse in both teamsí season-opener at the SU Soccer Complex Friday night.

The Minutemen, led by the goalkeeping of Jorge Becerra, held the Orange scoreless in the first half.

Syracuse ended the deadlock in the 49th minute as Chris Nanco took possession down the left flank, cut inside and slotted a low, hard shot in off the far post.

Ten minutes later, Syracuse scored off an attack on the left, Liam Callahanís shot deflecting in past off a charging Becerra.

In the 71st minute, Syracuse scored off a short corner, Kenny Lassiter redirecting Sergio Camargoís shot in at the near post as the Orange outshot UMass, 21-3. Becerra made eight saves and Syracuseís Hendrik Hilpert made one save.
