Brek Shea replaces Josh Gatt on U.S. Gold Cup team

CHICAGO - Brek Shea has been added to the U.S. National Team Gold Cup roster following an injury to midfielder Joshua Gatt.

Gatt suffered a knee injury on June 29 while playing for Molde FK in the Norwegian First Division. Further details on the injury will be provided by the club. Gatt was injured in the 41st minute of the 3-1 win against Sarpsborg and remained in Norway to undergo an MRI evaluation.

Per tournament rules, an injured player may be replaced on the roster up to 24 hours prior to a team's first match in the group phase.

"It's a very unfortunate situation for Josh," said U.S. head coach Jurgen Klinsmann. "This is now a couple of times that he has been injured after receiving a call up to the National Team, and it must be frustrating and disappointing. He has been making great progress and we were really looking forward to the opportunity to see him in action. We wish him all the best."

A former FC Dallas midfielder, currently with Stoke City on the English Premier League, Shea has been training with the U.S. team since July 1 when the group gathered in San Diego, and entered in the 59th minute of the USA's 6-0 win against Guatemala.

D.C. United midfielder Chris Pontius has been added to the pool of 12 players still eligible to be chosen for any additional changes to the 23-player roster. In addition to a change for injury, teams are allowed to make up to four changes to the roster in the 24 hours following their final group match.

Due to unforeseen circumstances that affected some teams competing in the 2013 C0NCACAF Gold Cup, the Gold Cup Committee recently agreed on adjustments to the tournament Regulations that allowed every participating team to make up to three changes to their 35-man and 23-man rosters. All non-injury final roster changes had to be made by July 6 at 12 p.m.
