Copa turns down USA appeal on Jones, Wood
HOUSTON -- The United States will have to play without midfielder Jermaine Jones and forward Bobby Wood when it takes on Argentina in the Copa America Centenario semifinals Tuesday night.
Copa officials Sunday turned down U.S. Soccer's appeal of Jones' red card and Wood's yellow card in the 2-0 quarterfinal win over Ecuador Thursday.
Jones was awarded the red card by Colombian referee Wilmar Roldan during a 52nd-minute confrontation that also saw Ecuador midfielder Antonio Valencia dismissed after a second yellow card for a tackle on Alejandro Bedoya.
A scrum ensued as American players rushed in after Valencia's tackle, and Jones raised an arm at Michael Arroyo.
Wood already was carrying a yellow card that he accrued in the 53rd minute. U.S. Soccer said Wood should not have been assessed because the ball was dead, claiming that because Jones remained on the field, the restart should not have taken place.
Bedoya, who also was assessed his second yellow card of the tournament, also will miss the Argentina match.
