Dempsey on largely Euro based U.S. roster
Former New England Revolution forward Clint Dempsey is among the 21 players U.S. national coach Bob Bradley named to the roster for the team's first World Cup qualifying match against Barbados at Home Depot Center in Carson Calif Sunday (5 p.m. ET ESPN2). The second leg of the total goals series will be played in Barbados June 22.
The roster for the first qualifier is made up mostly of European based players, but does include Brad Guzan and Sacha Kljestan of Chivas USA, Landon Donovan of the LA Galaxy, Brian Ching of the Houston Dynamo, Maurice Edu of Toronto FC, Frankie Hejduk of the Columbus Crew and Pablo Mastroeni of theColorado Rapids.
There are 13 players on the roster with experience in World Cup qualifying. Donovan, who became the fourth youngest male player in history to reach 100 caps when he went 90 minutes against Argentina on Sunday, leads the roster with 20 World Cup qualifying appearances. His seven career goals in WC qualifying are also a team best, tied with Eddie Johnson. Johnson, the Fulham-based striker, became the first player in U.S. history to score three goals as a substitute when he recorded a hat trick in the 6-0 semifinal round qualifying victory against Panama Oct. 13, 2004. Eddie Lewis is the second-leading cap-winner in qualifying on the roster (17), while Hejduk is entering his fourth qualifying campaign. Damarcus Beasley, who continues to improve his form after returning from a knee injury suffered last November, appeared in 13 matches in the 2006 qualfiers.
