DiMartino helps U.S. women down Mexico

GUATEMALA CITY, Guatemala -- Vicki DiMartino scored the first goal to start the United States to a 2-1 victory over Mexico in its final group match at the CONCACAF Women's Under-20 tournament Monday.

The victory gave the Americans a perfect 3-0 mark as they will take on Costa Rica in Thursday's semifinals for the right to qualify for the FIFA U-20 WWC (Fox Soccer Channel). The winner of the semifinal matches will qualify for the tournament as will the third-place team of the competition.

DiMartino, who hails from Massapequa, N.Y., struck in the 14th minute, taking a pass from team captain Sydney Leroux. DiMartino was just outside the corner of the penalty area and curled her shot just inside the far-side netting.

Leroux doubled the lead in the 66th minute, putting home a rebound of an Amber Brooks shot shot off the post.

The Mexicans sliced the advantage in half two minutes into stoppage time, but it was too little and too late
