U.S. U-20s fail to qualify

GUATEMALA CITY, Guatemala - The U.S. U-20 Men's National Team missed out on the FIFA U-20 World Cup after losing 2-1 to Guatemala on Wednesday night. The tough defeat at Estadio Mateo Flores means the USA also bows out of the CONCACAF U-20 Championship.

Conor Doyle scored the USA's lone goal, but that was not enough to spark a come-from-behind win against a spirited Guatemala team spurred on by a partisan home crowd in the nation's capital.

Gerson Lima gave Guatemala the lead in the 38th minute when he headed in Kendel Herrate's corner kick from inside the six-yard box.

Doyle equalized in the 66th minute taking a pass from Amobi Okugo before putting a shot from just inside the 18 yard box past goalkeeper Jose Carlos Garcia.

Henry Lopez scored the game winner in the 69th minute, pouncing on a loose ball and one timing a shot past goalkeeper Zac MacMath.

With the loss, the U.S. failed to qualify for an eighth straight trip to the FIFA Under-20 World Cup. It will be Guatemala’s first trip to the World Cup.
