FC Dallas stuns Galaxy with two late goals
CARSON, Calif. -- FC Dallas scored on two late corner kicks to take a 2-1 extra time win over the Los Angeles Galaxy in the semifinals of the U.S. Open Cup at the StubHub Center Wednesday night.
Defender Matt Hedges (116th minute) and substitute Victor Ulloa (121st) headed in Mauro Diaz corners as FC Dallas qualified for the final against the New England Revolution at Toyota Park in Frisco, Texas, Sept. 21. The game will be a rematch of the 2007 final, the Revolution taking a 3-2 victory over FC Dallas when the stadium was called Pizza Hut Park.
After playing to a 0-0 tie in regulation time, the Galaxy gained momentum, breaking the deadlock on Mike Mageeís penalty kick in the 101st minute.
Galaxy coach Bruce Arena added Giovani Dos Santos and Gyasi Zardes in place of Emmanuel Boateng and Alan Gordon in the 74th minute, and the duo, along with extra time substitute Sebastian Lletget, boosted the teamís energy level and helped set up the goal.
Zardes started the sequence leading to the penalty kick, running through the middle of the field to the edge of the penalty area, then laying off to Dos Santos, who took a touch and went toward the end line on the left. Chris Seitz made a diving attempt to stop Dos Santos, who went down, referee Ted Unkel immediately awarding the penalty. Magee then sent a low penalty kick into the right side of the net as Seitz dove the opposite direction.
A minute later, Dos Santos had a chance to up the lead, whiffing on a volley attempt from close range off a Jeff Larentowicz feed.
FC Dallas attempted to rally, moving defender Walker Zimmerman into a forward position. And the strategy paid off as Maynor Figueroa earned a corner kick, Hedges heading in Diazí corner to tie the score.
Dallas started finding an attacking rhythm, Michael Barrios crossing for Kellyn Acosta, who shot off target in the 119th minute. Acosta earned a corner, his cross headed out by Ashley Cole. Then, Ulloa headed past Cole, who was guarding the near post, off a Diaz corner, seconds before the final whistle.
