RSL wins first play-in game


SALT LAKE CITY---Kyle Beckerman scored two first half goals to lead Real Salt Lake to a 4-0 win over the San Jose Earthquakes in a play-in game for the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.

Beckerman opened ths scoring in the 21st minute, tapping in an attempt from Matias Mantilla. He added s second goal in the 33rd minute, blasting a long shot past goalkeeper Preston Burpo.

Yura Movsisyan scored a few seconds later to make it 3-0 and Andy Williams added a fourth goal in the 90th minute.

“We had them on the ropes, we knocked them down with the goal and then got one after that and it was no turning back for us after that,” said Beckerman about the third goal. “They were just chasing the game.”

The match was the first of three potential “Play-In” round contests RSL will need to win to simply qualify for this summer’s 95th edition of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. They will take on the Columbus Crew in a second MLS qualifying affair on May 27.
