Boston Olympiakos to face Pioneers


Amateur side Boston Olympiakos will face the USL2 Western Mass. Pioneers in the first round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on June 10 at Lusitano Stadium in Ludow, Mass.

Olympiakos clinched a berth as one of eight teams from the U.S. Amateur Soccer Association, while the Pioneers are one of eight teams from the USL second diviison

The winner will advance to the second round June 26. The third round is set for July 1, when the second-round winners will face eight MLS team.

The quarterfinals are scheduled for July 8, with the semifinals Aug. 12 and the Open Cup final Aug. 24.

Applications to host and hosting proposals received from each club determined Open Cup home teams. Teams will host matches through the quarterfinals of the tournament, with possible venue sites for the second round to be announced next week.

The eight MLS clubs qualifying for the competition in the third round to face the winners from the second round. The Division I teams will be added to the tournament bracket based on geographical considerations after the first round is completed.

At stake in the tournament is $180,000 in prize money broken down as follows: $100,000 to the champion, $50,000 to the runner up and $10,000 to the team that advances deepest into the tournament from each of the Division II, Division III and amateur levels.

The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, the U.S. Soccer’s national championship, is an annual competition open to all amateur and professional soccer teams affiliated with federation. It is the oldest annual team tournament in the U.S. and among the oldest soccer tournaments of its type in the world.

In 1999, the competition was renamed to honor long-time soccer pioneer Lamar Hunt, who passed away Dec. 13, 2006.
