First round recap

GERMANTOWN, MD---In a game that had several lead changes and needed 120 minutes to decide a winner, the Real Maryland Monarchs eliminated the New York Pancyprian Freedoms from the Lamar Hunt/U.S. Open Cup Friday night.

Defender Marcos Chantal scored the game-winning goal in the 117th minute to give the Real Maryland Monarchs a 3-2 victory in the first-round match.

The game originally was to be played Tuesday, but was put off for several days due to severe inclement weather.

Real Maryland advanced to the second round as it will play the Carolina RailHawks June 24. The RailHawks eliminated the Brooklyn Knights Tuesday.

Julio Cesar Santos took advantage of a Chantal error in the penalty area to give the Pancyprians a 1-0 lead in the 22nd minute.

But Real Maryland equalized on a goal from midfielder Muner Hassen in the 56th minute.

Again the Pancyprians grabbed the lead on a Matia Damiani goal in the 69th minute. And again Real Maryland tied it in the 85th minute.
