U.S. OPEN CUP
Rapids win play in with Wizards
KANSAS CITY, Mo---Wells Thompson scored two goals to lead the Colorado Rapids to a 2-1 win over the Kansas City Wizards in a U.S. Open Cup play in game at the Stanley H. Durwood Soccer Stadium on the campus of the University of Missouri-Kansas City Tuesday night.
The Wizards got off to a fast start with Teal Bunbury’s first goal as a professional in the fourth minute. The rookie spun past two defenders at midfield, made a run down the left, beat two defenders en route to the endline before launching a ball that floated over the head of Rapids goalkeeper Steward Ceus.
The Rapids equalized in the 24th minute when a a high floating ball landed at the feet of Thompson who finished from a tight angle.
A through ball from former Wizards player Claudio Lopez went to Thompson as Kansas City goalkeeper Eric Kronberg came out to cut down the angle, but a cool finish gave the Rapids the 2-1 lead.
