U.S. women to play at Netherlands on April 9

CHICAGO---The U.S. Women’s National Team will face the Netherlands in The Hague at Kyocera Stadium, home of ADO Den Haag of Dutch Eredivisie, on Tuesday, April 9, U.S. Soccer announced on Thursday.

The game is only four days prior to inaugural opening weekend of the fledgling National Women’s Soccer League. FC Kansas City hosts the Portland Thorns FC on April 13, followed by three games on April 14.

The international match in The Hague, located on the west coast of the Netherlands about 35 miles southwest of Amsterdam, comes four days after the USA squares off against Germany in Offenbach near Frankfurt.

The Americans’ first meeting with the Dutch since 2006 will kickoff at 7 p.m. local time (1 p.m. ET).

The games against Germany, the Netherlands and Canada in Toronto on June 2 are the first high-profile away friendly matches of the year for the U.S. WNT as U.S. Soccer celebrates its centennial.

“The Dutch and the Germans will be at the height of their preparations for the European championships and we are fortunate to get these kind of quality matches in the year after the World Cup and Olympic cycle,” U.S. head coach Tom Sermanni said in a statement. “Our team is looking forward to experiencing the fantastic soccer cultures of both countries and embracing the challenge of playing two sides just two months before they take part in the biggest women’s soccer event in Europe.”

The match against the Netherlands will be just the sixth meeting between the two countries, the first since 2006 and the first in the Netherlands since 1991, which was the USA’s only loss of the series, a 4-3 defeat in Vianen.

The match in 2006 took place at the Peace Queen Cup in South Korea, a 2-0 U.S. victory.
