Injuries force Dempsey, Johnson out of friendlies
CHICAGO---U.S. National Team forward Clint Dempsey and midfielder Fabian Johnson have been sidelined by injury and forced to withdraw from the U.S. roster for the upcoming friendlies against Scotland and Austria, it was announced on Wednesday afternoon
No replacements will be added to the squad.
Dempsey suffered a right calf strain during training Wednesday morning in Glasgow, Scotland. Fabian Johnson still is bothered by a persistent right ankle injury and will return to his club in Hoffenheim for further evaluation.
The Americans take on Scotland at Hampden Park Friday in Glasgow (3 p.m. ET, ESPN2 and UniMas). Four days later on Tuesday, they will play Austria for the first time since 1998 when they meet at Ernst-Happel-Stadion in Vienna (2:45 p.m. ET, NBC Sports Network and UniMas). The USA is concluding a memorable year, highlighted by reaching the World Cup for the seventh consecutive time. The Americans finished in first place in qualifying in CONCACAF for the third successive time and collected a 5-0-0 record at home in the final round, with all wins coming by shutout. Including a team-record 12-game winning streak, the U.S. has won 16 games in 2013, already a team high for a calendar year.
