No U.S. women among FIFA finalists
Here's just another reminder that the United States has fallen from its lofty perch in women's international soccer.
None of the three finalists for FIFA World Player of the year comes from the U.S.
The three women finalists are Marta and Cristiane from Brazil and Birgit Prinz from world champion Germany, which defeated the Brazilians, 2-0, for the Women's World Cup title in Shanghai, China Sept. 30.
Striker Abby Wambach was one of a handful of American players who stood out at the WWC, but failed to make the top three in voting by National Team coaches and captains.
The winner will be announced at the annual FIFA World Player Gala in Zurich Dec. 17.
The men's finalists are Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal), Kaká (Brazil) and Lionel Messi (Argentina).
Also to be awarded will be the FIFA Presidential Award and Fair Play Award, plus the winners of the FIFA U-17 World Cup Korea 2007 (Germany’s Toni Kroos), the FIFA U-20 World Cup Canada 2007 (Argentina’s Sergio Agüero) and the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup Rio de Janeiro 2007 (Brazil’s Buru).
