U.S. women rout Jamaica 6-0
CIUDAD JUAREZ, Mexico ---Abby Wambach scored two goals and assisted on another and Lindsey Tarpley had two assists as the United States rolled past Jamaica 6-0 in a CONCACAF Olympic Qualifying match Friday.
Carli Lloyd opened the scoring in the 18th minute, scoring on an assist from Wambach. Lauren Cheney made it 2-0 five minutes later, scoring after pouncing on a loose ball from 16 yards out.
Wambach scored on a penalty kick in the 53rd minute after Cheney was taken down.
In the 68th minute, Tarpley lifted a ball over the defense to Wambach who made it 4-0 after settling the ball with her thigh.
Tarpley set up heather O’Reilly in the 87th minute, sending in a cross from the right side, which O’Reilly finished from 12 yards.
The U.S added a sixth goal in the fourth minute of stoppage time. O’Reilly started the play by dribbling 40 yards before sending a through ball to Cheney. The UCLA star found Tobin Heath who put a shot into the upper right corner.
The U.S. faces Mexico at 3:30 p.m. ET on Sunday for first place in Group A.
In the first match of the day, Costa Rica tied Trinidad & Tobago, 2-2, in Group B on a goal from Cristin Granados with just 15 seconds left in the third and final minute of stoppage time. The draw means that Costa Rica can qualify for the semifinals with a tie against Canada in its final group game on April 6, or a loss by five or less goals.
