CANCUN, Mexico—It took 20 minutes for the U.S. Women to get in gear against Guatemala on Saturday, but once they did there was no stopping them. Amy Rodriguez had a hat trick, and Abby Wambach and Megan Rapinoe added two goals each on the way to a 9-0 U.S. win in CONCACAF Women’s World Cup qualifying at Quintana Roo Stadium.

The U.S. leads Group B at 2-0-0, and clinched a berth in the tournament semifinals with Saturday’s win.

Every one of the USA’s nine shots on goal went into the net, starting with Rodriguez’s game-winning tally in the 21st minute. Heather O’Reilly and Wambach did the heavy lifting, working a give-and-go that ended with O’Reilly’s 22-yard blast at goalkeeper Ana Lucia Spross. Rodriguez trailed the play and snagged the rebound after Spross’s save.

Two minutes later, Rapinoe doubled the U.S. lead, when Spross bobbled her long-range shot and it bounced into the lower right corner of the net.

Wambach, who had a hat trick in last Thursday’s 5-0 win over Haiti, connected twice in the pace of two minutes, heading home Rapinoe’s free kick in the 29th minute and blasting a shot off Spross’s hand and into the net in the 31st. Eight minutes later, she was subbed out for Alex Morgan, who scored her second international goal in the 49th minute, running onto a perfect pass from O’Reilly inside the six-yard box.

Morgan’s goal was the USA’s seventh of the match. Rapinoe completed her brace with a left-footer off Carli Lloyd’s assist in the 40th minute, and Rodriguez sent the shell-shocked Chapinas into halftime down 6-0, redirecting Lloyd’s shot past the helpless Spross in the closing seconds.

Lloyd got on the board with a curling free kick in the 56th minute, and Rodriguez chipped Spross in the 88th minute to complete the rout. Morgan picked up an assist on the play, with a quick pass back from near the left end line.

The USA close out Group B play on Monday, November 1, against Costa Rica.
