PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Cheney helps U.S. to two wins
U.S. Women’s National Team forward Lauren Cheney has been named the New England Soccer News Player of the Week for the week ending July 4.
Cheney, who plies her trade with the Boston Breakers, helped the U.S. to a pair of first round wins in the FIFA Women’s World Cup.
In the opening game against North Korea last Tuesday, Cheney notched the game-winner in the 54th minute. Cheney connected after a beautiful sequence started by Carli Lloyd near midfield. Lloyd’s long diagonal ball found Abby Wambach near the left sideline. Wambach cut back toward the edge of the penalty area, the found Cheney at the top right corner of the six-yard box. Cheney bounced a header across the goal and into the far side netting.
In Saturday’s game Cheney, a 3-0 win over Colombia set up Megan Rapinoe’s goal in the 50th minute.
