US Women finish atop FIFA Rankings

The United States finished 2011 atop the FIFA world women's rankings, the organization announced on Friday.

The Americans accrued 2,148 points, only five points ahead of second-place Germany (2,143). Japan (2,106), which captured the Women's World Cup in July, cracked the top three for the first time in its history, at the expense of Brazil (2,093). The South Americans fell to fourth place.

Canada was second in CONCACAF with 1,989 points, followed by Mexico (1,777), Costa Rica (1,557) and Trinidad & Tobago (1,500).

A total of 173 countries were ranked, with 38 tied for 136th and last place.

The next big event for CONCACAF women's teams will be qualifying for the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, which will be held in Vancouver from Jan. 19-29.

The next rankings will be released on March 16.
